Something which many of us fail to understand is juts how important sleep is for our lives. The renowned Dr. Bruce G. Fagel has been speaking out on this of late, and as someone who has experienced issues with it in the past, I completely concur regarding its importance. When we sleep we digest our emotions and our memories, our body repairs itself and we regenerate cells. Those who don’t get the right amount of sleep per night, between 6-8 hours, on a regular basis. are running the risk of poor performance and health issues.

There are some habits you can follow to get a great night’s sleep, and this is where to start.

Routine

If you go to sleep at the same time every night and you was up at the same time every morning then eventually your body will recognize this and be trained into it. This only takes a week or two of routine and you will find that your body already begins to prepare for sleep in the hour before you go to bed. Not only this, but your body will also begin to wake up at the same time naturally.

Gadgets in Bed

One of the worst things that you can do before you go to sleep is to look at your phone or your tablet. The light frequency from shoe devices causes the brain to wake up, which of course isn’t what you need. Even if you are able to fall asleep when you go to bed, owing to the brain’s new activity you are going to find it much more difficult to fall into the deep sleep that is required for high quality rest.

Dark Room

It is not just the light from gadgets that will wake the brain up, any light can cause this. For this reason it is essential that  you try to make your room as dark as you possibly can, pitch black is best. This will not only help you to fall asleep but the complete lack of light will help you get high quality REM sleep throughout the night.

Eating and Drinking

When you digest food the body uses this as energy, which is not exactly what you need when you are trying to get to sleep. This is why it is essential that you don’t eat anything in the final 3 hours before you go to bed. When it comes to drinks the only thing which you should be drinking in the hours before bed is water. When it comes to caffeine you should be looking to drink this no less than 6 hours before you wish to go to sleep, because it will only serve to keep your brain buzzing and your eyes open.

Pay attention to how you sleep and what your routine is. This process is critical for the body and so we have to make sure that we are working on it.
