The Sydney Cup is a Group 1 handicap for horses three years old and older, run over 3200 metres at Randwick Racecourse worth $2M in prize money.

While not as prestigious as the Melbourne Cup, the Sydney Cup draws a quality field of the best stayers in the region.

The 2022 Sydney Cup will be run on Saturday 9th April as part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival on day 2 of The Championships.

Sydney Cup Winners

The list of Sydney Cup winners includes champions of the turf Kingston Town, Tie The Knot and Makybe Diva. Sydney trainer Chris Waller has dominated the race in recent times with five wins in the last 11 years and the stable always has multiple horses entered. Male horses have dominated with only one mare (Etah James 2020) winning in the last 11 years.

Sydney Cup Form Guide

The Chairman’s Handicap is by far the best form race heading into the Sydney Cup. 17 of the past 32 Sydney Cup winners have completed their preparations in the 2600m Group 2 with eight horses winning both races. The last horse to complete the double was The Offer in 2014.

The 3200m trip is a true test of stamina and it pays to follow horses that are proven over the trip. Only nine favourites have won in the last 32 years with Hartnell ($1.67), Sydeston ($1.90) and Myocard ($1.62) all going down as odds-on chances.

Lightly weighted horses have a great record with six of the last seven winners carrying 52kgs or less. Put simply, bettors are looking for a race fit male horse with a good staying record who has run in the Chairman’s Handicap!

Did You Know?

Before 2010 most Sydney Cup winners were either born in Australia or New Zealand. Since then, only three Australian/NZ bred horses have won the race. This pattern is consistent with staying races all over the country.

Who will win the 2022 Sydney Cup?

Just like the Melbourne Cup, finding the winner of the Sydney Cup is difficult. The Joe Pride trained Stockman gets better as races get longer and loves wet tracks. With all the rain recently, he must be given a great chance. The Hawkes trained Mount Poppa is a dour type who will be trained to the minute on Cup day. His stable and connections enjoyed success with Niwot ten years ago and relocated Perth jockey Willie Pike will be hungry for success onboard him.
