Roulette: play by numbers
Roulette is a casino game that focusses almost entirely on the sequence of the numbers. The way numbers are sequenced differs between the American and European version of the game.
The American edition of Roulette usually runs as follows: 0, 28, 9, 26, 30, 11, 7, 20, 32, 17, 5, 22, 34, 15, 3, 24, 36, 13, 1, 00, 27, 10, 25, 29, 12, 8, 19, 31, 18, 6, 21, 33, 16, 4, 23, 35, 14, 2.
And the European Roulette numbers follow this clockwise pattern: 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26.
Although the number of pockets on a lot of roulette wheels differ, they all have the same highest pocket number of 36. The added pockets on the latter version come from the double zero being included as well as the standard zero that appears in both European and American roulette.
There are three main colours displayed across a Roulette wheel. Red and black are the dominating colours across the playing area, whilst green is occasionally featured in order to highlight the zero and aforementioned double zero pockets. The colours will normally follow the same numbered pattered across the various wheels, as detailed below:
Red – 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 34 and 36.
Black – 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 31, 33 and 35.
Green – 0 and 00 if it is present on the wheel.
As you can see, the numbers present themselves as ordered with no rhyme or reason, other than to be alternated so that they aren’t in numerical order as they go around.
Some players like to believe the myth that the Roulette wheel contains certain “hot” numbers that the ball is guaranteed to land on more than others. Although this myth is not overtly supported by any kind of betting authority, some casinos will have a display that details the most frequent winning numbers from a specific period of time, to give the illusion that there may be a better chance of walking away with a cash prize if you choose those same numbers – should the player interpret it as such.
Interestingly, many players hold a special place in their heart for the number 21. It is thought that the significance of the number is drawn from the famous card game Blackjack, where 21 is the most sought after total. Unfortunately for some, 21 holds no particular importance in a game of Roulette – sorry!
When it comes to online Roulette, the site will more often than not make it very clear that they operate using a Random Number Generator (RNG) to ensure that the selection is always completely random and fair. They will also adhere to the house edge of each Roulette game, with the RNG clearly stated, in order to be completely transparent with their players. They are often audited to ensure that this feature is in full function, giving you the fairest game possible.
