If you are considering renting a storage unit yourself but are wondering “how much does a storage unit cost?” we are here to help.

Keep reading to learn what to expect when it comes to storage cost.

How Much Does a Storage Unit Cost?

The truth is that the price varies based on the location, how large of a unit you need, how long you need the unit for, and whether you need it to have climate control or not. If the facility has extra adds on or you opt for insurance then you can expect to pay more.

The average price of a self storage unit rental is $87.89 per month for a 5X5 unit. A 10X10 averages to $95 per month and a 5X10 unit size averages to $62.95 monthly.

Factors that Affect the Price

There are times when a unit will be cheaper in a rural area in comparison to a busy city. There are always factors you want to take into account when you are shopping for a storage unit.

Storage Size

A smaller unit will cost less than a larger unit because you have less room. However, the square footage price of a larger unit will usually cost less per square foot. You can figure out what you are paying per square foot my multiplying the size of the unit to find the square footage and then divide that number by the monthly rent.

Always do the math to make sure that you are not getting charged more per square foot for a unit that is larger.

Seasons

Renting during busy seasons means you will pay more. Usually, storage between the summer months (May-September) tends to cost more. Most people in the United States are moving during these months because of the weather and many people rent units temporarily while they transition from their old home to a new home.

Due to an increase in demand during the summer, you will pay more because rental places might even fill up. If you want to save money rent your unit during the off-season rather than peak season.

Climate Control

Like we mentioned earlier choosing climate control will affect your price. Climate control will protect your stored items best because the humidity and air temperature will be regulated. Units that have climate control will cost more because it costs the business owner extra money to install, maintain, and power those units.

Time to Shop for Your Next Storage Unit
